WARNING:  Reflections in this mirror may be distorted by socially constructed ideas of beauty.

FOCUS:  Photojournalism

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  But is it really?  Isn’t so much of beauty dictated to us by society?  It is amazing what women go through to uphold what they believe is a socially acceptable image of beauty.  Hair styling, manicures, pedicures, waxing, plucking, peeling and all sorts of other ‘services’ add up to many hours, and many dollars, spent on our image.  Men, on the other hand, can get away with a $15 haircut and an occasional shave.  Why is that?  I thought about that today as I spent 2 hours at the salon having my hair cut, colored and styled and my eyebrows ‘threaded’ into perfect arches.  Is it insane to spend so much time and money on our appearances?

Hmmmm…. I’ll have to ponder that thought while getting my nails done next week….
